BMW’s New Entry-Level Sedan project has the 1-series aiming squarely at the new Mercedes-Benz CLA and Audi A3

BMW’s 1-series, while not a massive seller here in Canada, was still a proper sports coupe with rear-wheel drive. But, the next 1-series, due for 2017, will gain two doors and be a front-wheel drive affair.

Yes, folks, BMW will be including torque steer in its list of standard features on the 1-series.

“The NES is integral to our growth plans,” a BMW insider source told Autoweek. “It will be an important pillar in the future 1-series lineup, particularly in the U.S. and China, where sales of small premium-brand four-door sedans are on the rise.”

The new sedan could slot in below MINI’s offerings with regards to price.
