Finally, Canada will get a Nissan X-Trail again, but it isn’t the one we all miss.

We will still call Nissan’s new compact SUV by its current name. But, the Rogue and X-Trail are coming together. Unfortunately, it’s more Rogue than X-Trail.

Under the hood sits the same 2.5L four-cylinder engine as the previous model year Rogue, producing 170 hp and 175 lb-ft of torque. Also staying the same is the continuously variable transmission and there continues to be no other option.

The exterior does receive a bit of nip-tuck attention. Up front, the cheese grater grille is gone in favour of a much more stylish, corporate look. Also, the headlights are given a once-over to make them much more aggressive.

For all the good work designers did to the front, they really phoned it in with the rear, as the taillamps look like they are lifted directly from a previous-generation Lexus RX.

This is an incredibly important vehicle for both Nissan and its partner Renault, as the Rogue is the first car to use the Nissan/Renault Common Module Family platform that will underpin a significant number of their cars going forward. Only time will tell if this modularized methodology will pay dividends.

The 2014 Rogue will go on sale in December.
