Wouldn't the Q7 TDI be a more likely competitor for this SUV?  The Q5 TDI, even with all its option boxes ticked, barely hits the $60K mark.

If you want, sure.  Q7 is larger though

I happened to park my Q5 beside one of these yesterday and I thought the Q5 looked much smaller than the GC.   Maybe the absolutely enormous Q7 is bigger so maybe the VW Toureg diesel is the same size.    The Audis and the VW have the same 3 litre diesel.

I think the size, especially interior size and towing capacity is more important than absolute price in this class.

At that price I'd be tempted look at Porsche Cayenne diesel.

Sure, but you'll be in an entry level model vs a fully loaded model.

At this price point, Mercedes Benz M-Class and VW Toureg would be the closest competitors.

ummm... just a note to you fans of this model... the cost of the diesel is currently thrown in as incentive, so 4995 off, before we get any dealer discounts.... just sayin!

nice truck really. and agree about sizing. unlike compact cars and such, these vehicles can make whatever size or shape they want, and then just see where it falls segment wise once it's on the market. it's in between the q5-q7, xc60-xc90... i think a nice size. but then again, though it is "bigger" than those smaller options, the interior space doesn't really translate to the same result.

trailer brake... good point actually. but i will say that i have yet to have a customer have an issue... hell, even on trucks, it seems i only sell ones with a trailer brake when i push it a bit. funny, but i think you'll get a higher percentage of these drivers towing than hemi trucks!

It seems that the diesel engine is only available from the Overland trim and up, starting at $65k. Not available in the lower Laredo and Limited trim levels. Shame...

70k?...for a Jeep? HELL NO! this is at least 20k overprice in my opinion. Anything above 55K will make me want to be pampered at the dealer, which Chrysler dealers are terrible at.

Depreciation is huge as well, so the used market 'fixes' it, just like it does with all other D3 vehicles...http://www.autotrader.ca/a/Jeep/Grand+Cherokee/Grande+Prairie/Alberta/5_20092064_20056681847706/?showcpo=ShowCPO

If I was rolling the dice on a diesel, luxo rig this would be the one. The germans, well their reliability is just as suspect as Chrysler and this one at least looks great. But to tell you the truth, for $70K....the SRT8 is the only way to fly.
Lighten up Francis.....

The Grand Cherokee has been running second only to the Explorer in the mid-sized class. Jeep's laughing all the way to the bank.

Heard the ad on the radio with no charge diesel as well.  But when you go to the build & price, it doesn't seem to take it into account the discount.  I priced an Overland with diesel, and it came to $65,360 plus tax at a lousy interest rate of 3.9% (those are used interest rates) at 48 months or 60 months.

So even it take off the discount manually, still comes to $68,000 at 4% financing.  It will be interesting to see what these are worth in 3 years? $40k?  at 4% financing...

used 2014s are already going for low-mid 50s...in 3 years they will likely be worth high 20s-low 30s.

While I like the GC, it doesn't really compare to the Euro lux SUV/CUVs. I do perceive it to be a good example of a mid-sized CUV with off-road chops (which I could actually use). Therefore I compare it with the 4Runner and perceive the Toyota to be better in most areas that matter to me including price. So, if I wanted a lux CUV, I wouldn't pick the GC and if I wanted a versatile, off-road capable SUV, I wouldn't pick the GC. But I do like it...I guess.

That helps, since I think charging $5,000 for the engine alone is somewhat akin to sexual assault.  just sayin!  No way that engine costs Chyrfi $5,000 more than the base V6 to build.  Hell, no way it costs $500 more, but I'm ok with slight premiums for supply/demand (but I think $1,500 is the highest REASONABLE #).

Quote
Pricing: 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee
Base price (Summit Package): $63,345
Options: EcoDiesel Engine — $4,995; Granite Crystal Metallic Clear Coat — $195; CD Player — $225
I know we've already touched on it, but those options are ridiculous.  $225 for a CD player?  I mean, come on - soon Buick will start charging $500 for a cassette player.  Charging hundreds for obsolete tech.  Sad.  Hell, my 2006 RX400h has a CD player, DVD player, and a cassette player, and they were all standard.

If I was rolling the dice on a diesel, luxo rig this would be the one. The germans, well their reliability is just as suspect as Chrysler and this one at least looks great. But to tell you the truth, for $70K....the SRT8 is the only way to fly.
I think this is the truth, and what Northernridge says, too.  The GC (not to be confused with the Grand Caravan :P) fills a niche that only Porsche otherwise dabbles in, and price-wise, it's competitive to that.  ...but it's nowhere near the Cayenne as a true competitor, so that's fair.

Reliability may be a wash, but for an SUV, starting over $60k to have a diesel isn't a great strategy.  I like MB for bringing in diesels as the base engines.

Out of curiousity, have you driven a new GC?  They are pretty impressive, IMO.   The Toyota would likely be more reliable but the GC looks better inside and out and I would wager it's more refined overall.
