...for sure, but what's its competition in the "sporty compact car" segment?  the WRX?  According to rental agencies, that'd be a 'mid-size'...TIME TO ADD ANOTHER CATEGORY!   :rofl2:

Not surely I really like the paraphrasing that was written.  Why not just copy and past the press release which is more complete and accurate.  Also it includes all the factors that KBB evaluates to select a winner..  I knew some, but would have been nice if that was mentioned in your statement, so I didn't have to look it up... Way to go Mazda...

Jeeeze....it wasn't long ago that a bunch of us were whining about too many "cut and paste" stories from PR departments in this forum and why didn't Autos.ca add some editorial content. Give the poor guy a break.

Considering Mazdas from 2003 to 2012 had serious problems with rust, suspension top plates, serpentine belts and rear quarter wiring, there's nothing to point towards better quality in their new models.

Several reviewers have already complained about rattles on 2014 production press cars and the infotainment system is known for random crashes, reboots, blown fuses and hangs.  Yeah, certainly #1....

5 years is within the powertrain warranty of most manufacturers.  So, really, most major repairs will not be a huge expense for a car owner at this point.  The only numbers that really factor in are: Purchase price, Resale Price, fuel economy (petrol bill over five years), routine maintenance (frequency and cost).  It really has nothing to do with how reliable the vehicle is within five years.  Unless a poor perception of reliability negatively affects resale values (hello Chrysler vehicles?)

They are talking about cost to own, not which is the most bulletproof.

All cars have minor issues.

How many 2nd gen Mazda3 do you see with rust?  There is no TSB on it like the first generation.  We all know the MPV, Protégé, and first gen Mazda3 had the rust issue.  Not my brothers 8 year old Tribute, or my sisters 2nd generation Mazda3, or my Mazda6 (first gen), nor my Mazda5.  Nothing outside of maintenance on my Mazda6 when I sold it, mind you only 108,000km.  With the Mazda5 at 75k, only the HVAC light kept going out, they fixed that, for free... No rattles, and I beat up the Mazda5!

We've never owned anything close to as cheap to own as the Corolla.  Insurance is ridiculously cheap.  Tires are cheap.  Service is cheap.  The fuel bill is low.  Depreciation is low.  When something like brakes do wear out, the parts are cheap.

I have no problem with them adding to something to the press release, but the entire press release was not there.
