This rally has been or was held for several years. A sub-plot missing from the article is the fact there were 2 or 3 Suzuki Grand Vitara's entered each year, with non-professional drivers.
Despite being at both mechanical and numerical disadvantaqes compared to the Cayennes, the Vitaras did very well the first year. Porsche responded to this by making far more extensive mods to the Cayennes for the second year's rally, and they did better relative to the Vitaras. But the Vitaras (2-foor model), given that they cost a fraction as much and were almost stock, continued to do very well. In addition, the vehicle that was sent to scout the route ahead was a 4-door Grand Vitara.
