2010 Lincoln MKT; Day 1
« on: February 09, 2010, 09:40:14 pm »

This week, James hops into Lincoln's latest crossover model, the 2010 MKT. Based on the Ford Flex, the MKT adds all kinds of bells and whistles, not to mention Lincoln's distinctive design language.

The front end looks like it's suffering from a cleft palate.  ???

Folks - it doesn't get much uglier than this.  This and the Honda Crosstour should be removed from earth's catalog of cars.

While the grille on this MKT is way too big and over bearing, I would take this in a heartbeat over the Crosstour!   ;D

Lincoln has to win the prize for the most confusing naming schemes. I was trying to guess which car the MKT was before opening this thead, my guess was the truck they have. Nope, it's the Venza-type vehicle.

And yeah, the front on this car is terrible. Reminds me of cylons from the original BSG.

^ Agreed, their model names are beyond confusing.  Not a good thing when consumers are confused as to what models are what.

They do it so you remember Lincoln not the model, makes perfect sense actually.  Except they could be slightly less confusing by using a first letter to designate SUV vs car like Audi A for cars Q for SUV

It doesn't make sense to use random letters though.

Look at Mazda... 2, 3, 5, 6, CX-7, CX-9. The bigger the number, the bigger the vehicle. Makes sense.

Audi, BMW, all make sense. Like you said, A is for their cars, S for their performance, RS for ultra-performance, followed by numbers to indicate the class of the car. Similar with BMW.

Acura is getting as complicated as Lincoln too... if you have no previous knowledge of Acura's lineup, would you know what CSX, TSX, TL, RL, MDX, RDX, ZDX and whatever else is? Either you go will distinct and recognizable names (Accord, Civic, Corolla, etc.) that customers can learn and remember over the years, or you go with a number/letter approach that makes sense!

Still can't get past the looks of this thing. From the outside. I do love what Lincoln is doing with their interiors tho.

From a consumer's perspective, I don't think it makes sense at all.  Using random letters that have no meaning simply confuses buyers.  If they actually had some meaning, like Schnak already mentioned, I would understand.  Ford has simply done WAY too much model renaming over the last few years IMO.

+1

I could convince myself that the look of the MKT isn't too bad but NO WAY anyone could convince me that the Crosstour or the Acura ZDX is a nice looking vehicle.  To me the drastic look of the MKT & the Crosstour/ZDX aren't in the same league.

I agree with a lot of you about the confusing names and the ugly styling on this thing.  The Lincoln grill looks alright on the cars, but on this it's way too big.  Sometimes what might work on a car, has no business on a SUV.  Time to go in a new direction for this baleen whale.

Well its look like the new trend is over sized grills....Acura, Lincoln, check out the 2011 Ford Edge, Audi has had it now for a few years so get used to it everyone looks like they are here to stay.

Definately in agreement with everyone here. Ford seems to have really gotten itself all confused with names. I mean they brought the 500 nameplate back thinking it would strike a cord with older buyers... They should have considered that maybe most of those people aren't allowed to drive anymore. Then there was the Taurus X and now they're bringing back the Taurus name in a high end sedan that in no way resembles what the old Taurus stood for (cheap family transportation which obviously the new one is not). Talk about confusing!

What I'd like to throw out there is why you would buy a Taurus SHO (which I actually really like - well maybe not the price but otherwise) when for an extra $3k you can get this thing!? Same engine, carries WAY more stuff and people AND you get the dubious honour of the Lincoln badge and that *ahem* distinctive styling!
My other Honda is an MP4-31!

Agree Spec5 about the Taurus, but I would go for the Flex over this.  Super Engine although it's a lot thirstier than they have you believe.  From other tests I've read, the real mpg is well below 20 combined.  Every turbo engine I know will burn a lot more than a NA engine.  Especially one with twin turbos.  One of the two is always spooling, which means it's burning gas faster.

Nice point about the Flex Mozeby I believe you can even get it with this motor. Problem is the Flex looks like a freakin' hearse so the wife won't even look at it. Which is too bad because I think practically its a great vehicle... Then again, so was the Aztek :) It just looked like Suzanne Boyle unfortunately.

I will be very eager to see what real world MPG is on this thing. Especially if driven gently like I would 90% of the time. I agree about turbo motors being hard on fuel but isn't the whole idea of a turbocharger that its somewhat "free" horsepower? I realize you need more fuel to burn the extra air coming in but at least you're not turning it with a belt (ie. Supercharger).

If you use 355hp, you're going to use 355hp worth of fuel. Like any car you can hit the EPA ratings (14.7 city, 10.7hwy L/100km) if you want to.

Consumer Reports saw 22 Imp mpg (13L/100km) in the MKS in mixed driving.

FYI the turbos are parallel not sequential, one per cylinder bank. They either both spool or neither are spooled. As far as its fuel consumption, It's better than that of the equally powerful, and equally heavy, normally aspirated BMW X5 4.8i.

There are a few of them around town now. Better in person, but she's a big ol' gal.
