Finally, something “unordinary!” This week I am behind the wheel of something unique, and at this present time, I would even venture to say rare! In fact, I hadn’t even seen one of these myself until just last week at the New York auto show, and here it is in my driveway waiting for a week of fun in the sun: the 2011 Chevrolet Camaro SS Convertible.
Unfortunately, the weather forecast is for everything but sun this week, so here is hoping the weather man is wrong (as usual) and the clouds will part for me to enjoy this convertible in the spring air.

My tester is the big V8 version, the 6.2-litre V8 that is, but because it is mated to the six-speed automatic transmission, it offers only 400hp and 410lb/ft of torque; the manual version gets more power, with 426hp and 420lb/ft of torque. Not night-and-day, but yet another reason to want the ever-disappearing manual transmission.
If the standard Camaro was an exercise in bringing back retro, the convertible multiplies it ten-fold. Despite the convertible version being nearly identical inside and out to the hardtop version, little touches and just the flare of the drop top really create an aura of a simpler time where gas prices were a quarter of today’s.
Unlike yesteryear, though, this Camaro has airbags, heated and powered seats, a seven-speaker stereo system, ABS, traction control and stability control, power windows and a power ragtop.
